In 2014, Viking Fishing piloted a Cadet Programme with the objective of providing training and opportunities for school leavers who wish to pursue a career at sea.
Approximately 20 young men were selected and embarked on a 100-day programme that introduces trainees to basic concepts of seamanship − such as working safely on deck, operating winches and derricks, tying and splicing ropes and cables − and Safety Familiarisation training.
Classroom training is complemented by practical training on board a fishing trawler. Viking Fishing Cadets are paid a crewman’s wage while they train. Their training prepares them for a career as an officer or an engineer.
